What were the three main goals for Spain in the New World? To search for riches (silver and gold mines were established). To expand and protect their territory in the New World. To spread their religion (Catholicism).
What was the first permanent Spanish colony and when was it founded? St. Augustine, 1565
What is a presidio? A Spanish fort
What is a mission? A Spanish building used as a religious center
What is a hacienda? A large ranch - a place to house cattle and livestock
Where was New Spain's territory? New Spain’s territory was located in modern day Mexico, Central America, Florida, Georgia, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
How did the Spanish settlers interact with the Native people in the New World? The natives living in the areas where Spain settled were sometimes enslaved and forced to build the presidios, haciendas and missions. Natives were also converted to Christianity.
What were the three main goals for France in the New World? To establish a business (the fur trade). To maintain the fur trade. To find the Northwest Passage and explore the Mississippi
Who started the fur trade? French explorer, Jacques Cartier.
Who w did the French trade with, mostly? The Hurons
What was traded between them? The Hurons wanted European goods that the French had (kettles, guns, metal tools), and the French settlers wanted to learn how to fish, hunt, trap, skin, and manufacture fur hats and garments to sell.
What was the first permanent French colony in the New World? Quebec, Canada
Who founded Quebec, and when? Quebec was founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608
What is portage? To navigate the streams and tributaries of the rivers using birch bark canoes.
Which French explorers explored the Mississippi River? Jolliet & Marquette
Who founded Louisiana colony? Rene Robert Cavalier (aka, Sieur La Salle)
What is the port city that became the capital of Louisiana? New Orleans
What is a proprietor? A business owner
What is a royal colony? A colony that is managed by the king or monarch
When did the Dutch start settling in the New World? 1609
What explorer claimed land for New Netherlands in the New World? Henry Hudson
Which Native American tribe started trading with New Netherlands? The Iroquois
Where was New Netherland's territory in the New World? Modern-day New York, New Jersey, and Delaware
What was the first colony of the New Netherlands? New Amsterdam (currently New York City)
