| Vegetation Zones | a region that has distinctive types of plants because of its soil and climate |
| Sahara | a large, hot desert in North Africa that covers about 3.5 million square miles; largest non-polar desert in the world |
| Sahel | a zone of semidesert, south of the Sahara, with little rainfall; where short grasses, small bushes, and a few trees grow |
| Savanna | a vegetation zone of tall grasses, shrubs, and scattered trees, with a long rainy season; in a tropical region |
| Rainforest | an area of tall trees and high amount of rainfall that contains many different plants and animals |
| clan | a group related by families; groups with common ancestry |
| matrilineal | a family line traced through the mother’s side |
| patrilineal | a family line traced through the father’s side |
| nomads | a person who has no permanent home, and who travels from place to place; like the Berbers |
| trans-Saharan trade | system of extensive trade routes that connected peoples north and south of the Sahara |
| caravan | a group of people, especially traders or pilgrims, traveling together across a desert |
| Ghana | First of the great trading empires in West Africa; situated between the Sahara and the origins of the Senegal & Niger Rivers; its wealth was based on trans-Saharan trade |
| Silent barter | A process in which people exchange goods without ever contacting each other directly |
| Mali | A West African empire ruled by the Mande that became a major crossroads of the Islamic world; its wealth is based on trans-Saharan trade; kingdom encouraged the spread of Islam |
| Mansa Musa | The first West African ruler to practice Islam devoutly; emperor of Mali; made a famous pilgrimage to Mecca and established trade routes to the Middle East; |
| Catalan Atlas | one of the most significant world maps of the 14th century that put Mali on the map |
| hajj | pilgrimage made by Muslims to the holy city of Mecca at least once in their lifetime |
| Songhai | A people who broke away from the empire of Mali and built their own vast empire in Africa |
| Moroccans | northern neighbor of the Songhai empire who brought firearms to West Africa |
| griot | a talented poet-musician who tells stories, sings songs, and recites poems to share history |
