Bill of Rights Many Americans wanted their rights spelled out in the country's basic law, so ten amendments added to the Constitution by the end of Washington's first term.
checks and balances concept (contributed to by Montesquieu) where each of the three branches of government should limit the powers of the other two, so no one branch would be fully independent of the other two.
concurrent powers Powers shared by the federal government and the states
domestic tranquility prevents civil unrest, trespassing, etc.
executive branch the division of a government that enforces the law and administers its daily activities
expressed powers the powers granted to a government that are specifically spelled out by its constitution
impeach to remove an elected official from office on the accusation of wrongdoing
implied powers powers not specifically granted in a constitution but which can be justified as necessary if the government is to carry out its duties
informal amendment changes in the interpretation of the Constitution brought about by court decisions and new legislation
judicial branch the division of government that includes the courts and justice system. The judicial branch has the duty of interpreting the law
judicial review the power of the courts to examine the actions of the executive and legislative branches of government and the nation's laws and to declar them void if they do not conform to the Constitution.
legislative branch the lawmaking body of a government, such as a congress or parliament
loose construction the belief that the federal government shoudl make generous use of teh implied powers granted by the Constitution
reserved powers all powers that are not granted to the federal government and that belong to the states and to the people, according to the Tenth Amendment
separation of powers the division of the government inot legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The theory is that separation of powers provides a system of checks and balances
strict construction the belief that the federal government is limited ot the express powers granted by the Constitution.
unwritten constitution customs and traditions that influence governmental procedures and practices but are nto part of the formal constitution
