Key Figures

American Revolution key figures.

TermDefinition
George Washington As the commander of the Continental Army, Washington led American forces against the British and played a crucial role in key battles. His leadership helped guide the colonies to victory and independence.
Thomas Jefferson Jefferson was the main author of the Declaration of Independence, a document that formally declared the colonies' separation from Britain. His words inspired colonists and set the foundation for American values of freedom and equality.
Benjamin Franklin Franklin was a diplomat who played a key role in securing France’s support for the American cause. His negotiations helped gain French resources and troops, which were vital for winning the war.
John Adams Adams was a passionate advocate for independence and helped secure international support. He also served on the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence and later helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the war.
Marquis de Lafayette A young French nobleman, Lafayette volunteered to fight with the Continental Army. He became a trusted general under Washington and used his influence in France to gain critical support for the American fight for independence.
Benedict Arnold Initially a hero for the American side, Arnold became infamous for betraying the Continental Army and attempting to hand over the American fort at West Point to the British. His name is now associated with treason.
