What continent was WWI fought? Europe
In what year did WWI begin? 1914
What were the 4 main causes of WWI? militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism
What is imperialism? The building of a strong military to protect a country.
What are alliances? Making agreements to support and defend each other.
What is imperialism? Building empires by taking colonies.
What is nationalism? A deep devotion to one's country.
Who were the Central Powers? Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Ottoman Empire
Who were the Allied Powers? Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and Serbia
Which country declared war first and what event caused that? Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia because a Serbian man killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
Name 3 weapons of the new weapons used in WWI. poison gas, machine gun, flamethrower, tanks, submarines, airplanes
What did Germany do in 1915 that angered the U.S.? They sank the Lusitania.
What caused the U.S. to enter the war in 1917? Germany broke its promise and started sinking ships again.
Was the U.S. a part of the Central Powers or Allied Powers? Allied Powers
What is a civilian? A person who is not in the military.
What do you call all the people who stay at home during a war? home front
What did the government do to create more supplies for the soldiers? They rationed supplies for civilians and made factories make war supplies.
What did the government use to persuade people to help with the war? Propaganda
Which 2 groups of people got more factory jobs after the war? Women and African Americans.
Which alliance won the war? Allied Powers
What is an armistice? An agreement to stop fighting.
On what date was the armistice signed at the end of WWI? November 11, 1918
Why did the leaders meet in France in 1919? To write the Treaty of Versailles
How did the treaty affect Germany? They had to pay damages (money) and lost land.
How did the treaty affect Austria-Hungary? It was split into 4 countries.
How did the treaty affect the Ottoman Empire? It was split up.
What was the League of Nations? An organization to help countries to solve problems peacefully.
Why did the U.S. Congress vote against joining the League of Nations? They were afraid the U.S. would get dragged into more wars.
How did trench warfare make life different for soldiers in WWI? They lived and fought on the battlefield.
