| hereditary | Passing of traits from parents to offspring. |
| Mandate of Heaven | The belief that the Chinese king’s right to rule came from the gods. |
| Huang He River | Yellow river |
| Yangtze River | The longest river in Asia; 3rd longest river in the world. |
| Middle Kingdom | Term that ancient China used to refer to themselves; believed they were the center of the Earth. |
| dynasty | A series of rulers from the same family. |
| philosophy | A system of beliefs and values. |
| Confucianism | A philosophy of Confucius. Shows the way to orderly society and stresses a moral code of conduct. |
| Daoism | A philosophy of Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu that advocates a simple, honest life and non-interference with the course of natural events. |
| Legalism | A philosophy emphasizing strict obedience to the law system. |
| filial piety | Respect shown by children for their parents and elders. |
| civil service | The group of people whose job it is to carry out the work of the government. |
| tenant farmer | Farmer who works land owned by another and pays rent either in cash or crops. |
| Silk Road | An ancient trade route that linked China, India, and the Middle East. |
