| expand | to increarse in size or number |
| dissent | to disagree with or oppose an opinion; disagreement or opposition |
| persecute | to mistreat people or groups on the basis of their beliefs |
| tolerance | the ability to accept or put up with different views or behaviors |
| enforce | to apply a rule or law; to carry out by force |
| policy | a statement of ideals or plan of action |
| patroon | landowner in the Dutch colonies who ruled over large areas of land |
| pacifists | people opposed to the use of war or violence to settle diisputes; a person who is opposed to the use of violence |

| indentured servant | laborer who agrees to work without pay for a certain period of time in exchange for passage to America |
