What is the purpose/methods of the KKK? - While originally created to attack the Black community, the KKK has evolved to also target: Jewish community, Latinx community, Asian community, Immigrants, Communism, Teaching of Evolution , Birth control/abortion.
Civic Action describes all the things people do to bring about social and political change. A democracy like ours is based on citizens engaging the government. When people take civic action, the government responds.
Sit ins A form of peaceful protest where protesters occupied seats in a segregated facility.
Boycotts People will protest a business by refusing to buy or use their products
Marches Large groups of protestors take to the streets with signs, banners, songs, and chants to promote change.
Civil Disobedience Refusal to obey laws by peaceful form of protest
Black Separatism Political movement that seeks separate economic/cultural development for African Americans
Affirmative Action Program to ensure equal opportunities for applicants base on race
Enfranchised to give a person or group the right to vote in elections or to full citizenship privileges
Jim Crow The Jim Crow laws were state and local laws that enforced racial segregation
Sharecropping Giving a portion of your crops as rent (this kept the poor in a cycle of poverty)
How do Plessy v Ferguson and Brown v Board of Education relate/differ? Plessy v. Ferguson- made separate facilities for Black Americans and whites. Typically schools, facilities etc were not equal. Brown V Board of Ed Supreme court which overturned Plessy V. Ferguson.
How do Plessy v Ferguson and Brown v Board of Education relate/differ? Made separate but equal to be unconstitutional. Both cases dealt with segregation
What does the Little Rock 9 tell us about school desegregation? - Little Rock 9 were not allowed in school after Brown V. Board. The National Guard had to escort students into schools. This shows the government is enforcing desegregation
Malcolm X a radical leader of black nationalism who espoused violence to gain black rights.
Martin Luther King Jr Civil rights activist and leader of the boycott that got arrested for it and used peaceful protest to stop segregation on buses and public transportation with peace. MLK began as a Civil Rights Leader with Montgomery Bus Boycott
Rosa Parks Arrested for not giving up her seat on the bus to a white male. Led to the Montgomery Bus Boycotts. She was became the secretary of the NAACP
Civil Rights Act of 1964 The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.
Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed the discriminatory voting practices adopted in many southern
Fair Housing Act of 1968 prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, etc.
