Early Colonization

VA US History Early Colonization

colony A settlement far from home, ruled by the home country
persecution constant bad treatment of a person or group based on their religion or ethnic background
debtor a person who owes money to someone
The Mayflower Compact document that outlined the pilgrims' right to govern themselves and to create a civilized society for the greater good of the colony
indentured servants men and women who did not have money for passage to the colonies, who agreed to work without pay for the person who paid for their passage. At the end of their contract they were free.
plantations large properties devoted to growing mainly one crop, such as tobacco or rice.
specialization focusing on making one or a few products
interdependence two or more people who depend on each other for goods and services
resources the raw materials, people and equipment used to produce goods and services
naval having to do with boats or ships
artisans skilled workers who use tools to perform a craft
blacksmith makes nails and hinges, farm tools, and iron materials
cabinetmaker makes tables, chairs, cabinets, musical instruments, etc.
carpenter builds homes and shops
cobbler makes boots and shoes
coopers made barrels and casks used to ship and store all sorts of things (like flour or milk for example)
founders worked with brass and bronze to make bells, swords and buckles
saddlers made leather goods for horses, such as saddles and harnesses
silversmiths artists who made bowls, cups and pitchers
tailors sewed clothing for wealthy individuals
wheelwright made wheels for carriages and wagons
whitesmiths worked with metals, such as tin
wigmakers made wigs for the elite (as was the style in the 1700s for both men and women)
proprietor a person who owns a very large tract of land
Governor's Council a group in legislature that are handpicked by the governor or proprietor
General Assembly members elected by voters in towns or counties
