conflict of interest
cross sample a method of accurately measuring public opinion by questioning a carefully selected segment of each major group in the total population
editorial page
initiative the right of the citizens of a state to petition their legislature for new law. If enough registered voters sign the petitions, the measure is put before all the voters at the next general election.
lobbyist a person or group of people who try to influence legislators on behalf of special-interest groups
mass media the film, broadcast, and print media that help shape public opinion
petition to ask a government official for support of a casue or a redress of grievances. Petitions can be verbal or in writing and can be submitted by an individual or a group.
popular sovereignty the right of a people to make their own laws. In American history, it also refers to the argument over a territory's right to decide the issue of slavery for itself when it became a state.
pressure group a group organized to lobby for the passage of legislation favorable to its members
promulgate
propaganda information slanted to persuade people to think a certain way or to believe the truth or falsity of a point of view
proposition a public issue submitted to the voters for passage or rejection
public opinion The views and attitudes of citizens regarding all aspects of life in the United States
recall the legal process that gives voters a chance to remove elected officials from office before the end of their term
referendum the legal process that gives the voters a chance to express their approval or rejection of a particular issue or proposed law
straw poll an informal poll of people's opinions
