| Parallel | Moving or lying in the same direction and the same distance apart. The Tigris and the Euphrates rivers run parallel to each other. |
| Silt | Fine particles of fertile soil. Yearly floods in Mesopotamia left behind silt, which was good for farming. |
| Irrigation | A system that supplies dry land with water through ditches, pipes, or streams. Sumerians used irrigation to control water flow. |
| Surplus | An amount that is left over after a need has been met. Farmers stored surpluses so they could eat at a later time. |
| City-States | Independent state or governing area that includes a central city and the territory around it. Sumer was made up of city-states. |
| Polytheism | A belief in more than one god. Sumerians believed in more than one god, and they each had a unique role. |
| Ziggurat | A pyramid-shaped structure with a temple at the top. Sumerians honored their gods with ziggurats. |
| Consist | To be made up of. The middle class in Sumer consisted of merchants, farmers, fisherman, and artisans. |
| Patriarchy | Mesopotamia was a society dominated by men, also known as a “patriarchy.” |
| Cuneiform | A writing system developed by the Sumerians that used wedge-shaped marks. |
| Scribes | A person who copies or writes out documents; often a record keeper. Scribes in Mesopotamia recorded contracts, business deals, and important events. |
| Epic | A long poem that records the deeds of a legendary or real hero. The oldest known epic is from Sumer. It is titled, Epic of Gilgamesh. |
