Oppressive Cruel and unjustly harsh
immigrants People who move to live permanently in a different county
emigrated Left one's native country and moved to another
tenements Run-down apartment buildings
ghettos Poor areas of a city where people from similar ethnic groups live
urbanization The process by which many people come to live in cities
phonograph An early type of machine that played recorded music
Patent A government document granting an inventor sole rights to an invention and protecting the invention from being copied by others.
Nativism A policy of favoring native-born individuals over immigrants, often leading to anti-immigrant sentiment.
Ellis Island A famous entry point in New York Harbor where millions of immigrants were processed from 1892 to 1954.
Angel Island The immigration station in San Francisco Bay where Asian immigrants were processed, often with stricter regulations than Ellis Island.
