| Patent | A government document granting an inventor sole rights to an invention and protecting the invention from being copied by others. |
| Nativism | A policy of favoring native-born individuals over immigrants, often leading to anti-immigrant sentiment. |
| Ellis Island | A famous entry point in New York Harbor where millions of immigrants were processed from 1892 to 1954. |
| Angel Island | The immigration station in San Francisco Bay where Asian immigrants were processed, often with stricter regulations than Ellis Island. |
