| Enlightenment | a European movement during the 1700s that focused on freedom for people |
| John Locke | A philosopher who believed in the natural laws. He also thought people should elect their own leaders |
| Natural Rights | the rights of "life, liberty, and property" |
| Reason | the use of logic and good judgement to make decisions and discoveries |
| Rousseau | a philosopher who believed governments worked best when there is a social contract |
| Social contract | agreement that people give up certain rights to the government in exchange for protection and other benefits |
| Reform | to make changes for improvement or to remove harmful things |
| Censorship | when a government does not allow people to read, write, or say what they want. |
| Philosopher | a person who studies science, math, and medicine |
| Montesquieu | a philosopher who believed the best governments had a balance of power |
| Balance of Power | when the power of the government is split between many groups. In the United States power is split between The President, Congress, and the Supreme Court |
| Mary Wollstonecraft | a philosopher who believed in feminism, or equality for women |
