| tribe | a group of families bound together under a single leadership, used to describe people who share a common culture |
| league | an organization that people form that unites them for a common purpose |
| clan | a group of families who share the same ancestor |
| reservation | land set aside by the United States government for Native Americans |
| longhouse | a long-shaped home shared by several related Iroquois families |
| wampum | belts or strings of polished beads made from shells, used for trading and gift-giving by Iroquois and other Native Americans |
| Iroquois Confederacy | the league of five major Iroquois nations, formed to end conflict and maintain peace among Iroquois tribes |
| compromise | settlement of a dispute or disagreement in which each side agrees to give up part of its demands |
| pueblo | the apartment-style homes of the Native Americans of the Southwest |
| adobe | a type of clay made into sun-dried bricks, used on buildings by Native Americans of the Southwest |
| kiva | underground rooms used by some Native Americans for religious ceremonies |
| kachina | the living spirit of an ancestor in the Pueblo religion, sometimes in the form of a carved figure |
| hogan | a traditional Navajo hut, dome- shaped and made of logs, sticks, and mud |
| prairie | large, open areas of grassland |
| lodge | a large, round hut made of logs, grasses, sticks, and soil, built by Native Americans of the Plains |
| teepee | a cone-shaped dwelling that can be moved easily and is made of animal skins, used by Native Americans of the Plains |
| travois | a type of sled used by Native Americans to carry goods across the plains, made from two joined poles and dragged by a horse or dog |
| coup stick | a special weapon used by a Lakota Sioux soldier, decorated to represent acts of bravery |
| powwow | Native American ceremony involving feasting, singing, and dancing |
| jerky | thin strips of sun-dried meat |
| technology | the use of science and tools to make or do something |
| totem pole | wooden posts carved with animals and other images, made by Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest to honor important persons or mark special events |
| potlatch | a gift-giving feast practiced by Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest |
| shaman | a Native American doctor or spiritual healer |
