4th Reconstruction Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| reconciliation | To return to having a friendly relationship after a fight or disagreement. |
| amputee | A person who has had an arm or a leg removed. |
| popular vote | The direct vote of the people, as opposed to the electoral college. |
| servitude | The condition of being enslaved or having no choice but to obey another person. |
| naturalize | Make someone a legal citizen of a country that the person was not born in. |
| pardon | To forgive an error or offense. |
| penalize | To punish. |
| reconstruction | The period following the Civil War when the Southern states were brought back into the Union (1865-1877). |
| amendment | A change or addition to a written document. |
| assassination | A murder by sudden or secret attack, often for political reasons. |
| citizenship | Having rights, privileges, responsibilities, and duties as a member of a community, state, or nation. |
| civil rights | The rights of citizens to have political and social freedom and equality. |
| electoral college | The people selected to represent the U.S. states by formally casting the votes that officially select the president and vice president in the U.S. |
| guarantee | A formal promise that certain conditions will be fulfilled. |
