The Louisiana Purchase Vocabulary

| Westward Expansion | The United States’ addition of territory and migration of people to the west during the 19th century. |

| guide | A person who helps people on a journey to find their way to their destination. |
| port | A place where ships can dock to transfer goods. |
| territory | An area owned or controlled by a government but that does not have equal status with other administrative regions (such as provinces or states) in the rest of the country. |
| interpreter | A person who translates words from one language to another. |
| Louisiana Purchase | The large region of land the U.S. bought from France in 1803 that more than doubled the size of the country. |
