| militarism | policy of building up strong armed forces (military) to prepare for war |
| alliances | when nations promise to defend and help each other - keep peace |
| imperialism | belief that stronger countries should control weaker countries to build empires; rivalry, mistrust and anger |
| nationalism | devotion (loyalty) to one's nation and its interests |
| trench warfare | war combat (fighting) in which soldiers are in trenches (ditches) dug into the ground |
| neutral | not taking sides in a conflict |
| propaganda | spreading ideas (information) to help (positive) a cause or hurt (negative) an opposing cause |
| Central Powers | Austria-Hungary, Germany, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria |
| Allied Powers | Serbia, Great Britain, France, Russia |
| stalemate | a situation or conflict in which both sides are evenly matched and can't make progress against the other |
| u-boat | a German submarine |
| assassination | the act of killing someone, especially a famous or important person, in a sudden or violent way |
| armistice | an agreement to stop fighting |
| reparations | payments made for damages caused during a war |
