Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro Two of the largest cities in the Indus Valley civilization
Gupta Empire Created the decimal system, Sanskrit epics, astronomy, mathematics, and metallurgy.
Caste system A rigid social structure that divided people into four hierarchical classes, or varnas.
Dharma In Hinduism, includes conduct, virtues and "right way of living".
Karma The relationship between a person's action and the consequences of that action.
Maurya Empire The first empire to cover most of the Indian subcontinent, lasting from around 321–185 BCE
Monarchy A system of government in which one person governs, usually a king or queen.
Sanskrit The classical language of India and the sacred language of Hinduism.
Hinduism A complex set of beliefs, values, and customs that is the dominant religion in India.
Buddhism A major world religion that originated in India around the 6th century B.C.E. by Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha.
silk A very smooth, light fabric that's usually made of fibers from silkworm cocoons.
sari A long piece of cloth that women in South Asia wear wrapped around their body.
Ganges River The holiest river in Hinduism; they believe it to be a “life-giving river,” calling it Mother Ganges.
Asoka An Indian emperor and patron of Buddhism; considered one of India's greatest emperors
astronomy The scientific study of the universe and everything in it, beyond Earth's atmosphere
monsoon A shift in winds that often causes a very rainy season or a very dry season.
Subsistence farming Farming intended to provide for the basic needs of the farmer, with little surplus.
architecture The art and technique of designing and building
Indus River a source of water in a region with little else, and was vital for farming and irrigation.
Himalayas A mountain range in Asia, separating the plains of the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau.
