Spanish Colonial Era

| Reconquista | the 800 year war of the Spanish removing the Moors from their land. |
| Indigenous | People that are native to a certain area. |
| Conquistadors | Leaders of the Spanish military that believed in war and conquest. |
| Viceroyalty | Land that is ruled by an official chosen by the king & queen. |
| Viceroy | The official who whos was selected by the king an queen and sent to America to set up New Spain. |
| Bison | Buffalo; a main food source for Native Americans Indians; never seen by the Spanish. |
| Shamans | Native American Medicine Men that were viewed as healers, physical, and leaders. |
| Alonso Alvarez de Pineda | Led on the early Spanish expeditions in the Northern part of New Spain. He searched for water route to the Pacific oceans. In early 1519, he sailed along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to Mexico and made the first map of Texas. |
| Alvar Nunes Cabeza de Vaca | Was one of the first Europeans to extensively explore the land that became Texas |
| Cibola | The rumored city of Gold that was that was thought to be located in the Arizona - New Mexico area. Many conquistadors sought it out, but it was never found. |
| Pelts | Animal skin that have been tanned and dried for different purposes. |
| Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Selle | A French explorer that was the first to sail the Mississippi river from North to South into the Golf of Mexico. |
| Conquest | To take control of an area by force. |
| God, Gold, & Glory | The mantra of the Spanish conquistador. Convert Native to Catholicism, search for gold, and bring glory to their God, King, and selves. |
| Tenochtitlan | The Aztec capital city that was massive and thriving when the Spanish conquistadors arrived in Mexico. |
| Fort St. Luis | After accidently sailing past Mississippi river La Salle's men shipwrecked in Texas. They constructed a French Fort here where most of his men died from starvation and sickness or Indians attacks. The Fort was abandoned & La Salle murders his men. |
| Mission | a religious settlement & church establishment set up to convert people to Christianity. |
