TermDefinition
Reconquista the 800 year war of the Spanish removing the Moors from their land.
Indigenous people that are native to a certain area.
Conquistadors leaders of the Spanish military that believed in war and conquest.
Viceroy land that is ruled by an official chosen by the Queen & King
Bison buffalo; a main food source for Native American Indians; never seen by the Spanish
Shamans Native American Medicine Men that were viewed as healers, physics, and leaders.
Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca was on of the first Europeans to extensively explore the land that became Texas.
Cibola The rumored city of Gold that was not thought to be located in the Arizona -New Mexico area. Many conquistadors sought it out, but it was never found.
Alonso Alvarez de Pineda led on to the early Spanish expeditions in the Northern part of New Spain. He searched for a water route to the Pacific ocean. In 1519, he sailed along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to Mexico and made the first map of Texas.
Pelts Animal skins that have been tanned and dried for different purposes.
Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle a French explorer that was the first to sail the Mississippi river from North to South into the Gulf of Mexico.
Conquest To take control of an area by force.
God, Gold, & Glory the mantra of the Spanish conquistador. Convert natives to Catholicism, search for gold, and bring Glory to their god, King, Country, and selves.
Tenochtitlan the Aztec capital city that was massive and thriving when the Spanish conquistadors arrived in Mexico.
Fort St. Louis after accidentally sailing pas Mississippi, La Salle's men shipwrecked in Texas. They constructed a French Fort where most of his men died from starvation and sickness or Indian attacks. The fort was abandoned & La Salle murdered by his men.
Mission A religious settlement & church establishment set up to convert people to Christianity.
