Economy The way goods and services are made, sold, and used in a civilization
Geography The study of earth's physical and human features
History The study of the past
Government A person or group of people that have power to rule an area
Culture The customs, arts, social structures, and achievements of a civilization or group of people
Location Locates a place on earth by finding where it is by using absolute and relative location
Place Describes what a place looks like by LOOKING AT the landforms and man made buildings
Human Environment Interaction Describes how humans interact with the environment -adapt -depend -modify
**Adapt (Part of Human Environment Interaction) To adjust to the environment
**Depend (Part of Human Environment Interaction) To need the environment
**Modify (Part of Human Environment Interaction) to change the environment
Movement Describes how people, goods, and ideas move throughout the area
Region Desribes what the area has in common (ie landforms, weather, religion, etc)
Paleolithic Era Known as the old stone age... early humans used stone tools and moved from place to place

Neolithic Era Known as the new stone age...early humans stopped movingand started farming
Nomad A person who moves from place to place in search of food/water/shelter
Migration The process of relocating (moving) to a new region or place

Agricultural Revolution A time when humans were growing a steady food supply and using animals to help; allowing them to settle in one location
MR. HeLP A mnemonic device for the 5 themes of geography -M= Movement -R= Region -He= Human environment interaction -L= Location -P=Place

Scale Represents the distance between two locations on the map Ex: 1 inch on the map equals 1 mile on the ground
Compass Rose A design on a map that shows directions
Cardinal Directions The 4 major compass points: -North -South -East -West
Intermediate Driections The in-between compass points: -Northeast -Southeast -Northwest -Southwest
Symbol A picture that is used to represent an object on a map
Physical Map This map shows natural landforms such as rivers, lakes, and mountains
Political Map This map shows boundaries defining countries, states, provinces and territories and the major cities that lie within
Latitude distance north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees
Longitude Distance east or west of the prime meridian, measured in degrees
Climate The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time
Push Factor a factor that makes people leave their homes (example: not enough jobs, high crime, bad climate); a condition that "pushes" people away from their country
Pull Factor a factor that makes people want to move to a new place (freedom, new job opportunities, a better life); condition that "pulls" people to a new country
