Ancient Egypt

For the ancient Egypt test in Mr. During’s class October 1st

Rosetta stone Important artifact found in Egypt. It was the key to unlocking the mystery of hieroglyphs because part of it was written in Greek.
Silt Fine bits of rock and sand that made the sand very fertile . The Nile river deposited it each year.
Pharaoh Ruler of Egypt. Made laws and any other important decision that affected Egypt.
Nile river Longest river in the world. Egypt is often called “ the gift of the Nile because it provided so much to Egypt. ( Fertile land, transportation, food, protection )
Dynasty Series of rulers from the same family. Egypt had 30 different ruling dynasties.
Hieroglyphics Egyptian form of writing
Papyrus Egyptian form of paper. All-important records were written on papyrus. Made from papyrus plant growth along the Nile river.
Pyramid Burial place for the dead. Eventually pharaohs began to build tombs hidden in valleys to protect them from tomb robbers.
Mummy Preserved body made for the afterlife.
Hatshepsut First female to rule Egypt as a pharaoh.
Tutankhamen Most well known of all the pharaohs’ because of the discovery of his intact tomb in 1922.
Canonic jars Buried with the dead. Held important organs for the next life. ( liver, intestines, lungs, stomach ).
Natron Natural salt found in Egypt. Helped preserve the body for the next life by drying out the body and killing bacteria.
Mummification process Took 70 days to complete important religious practice.
Religion Polytheistic
Inundation The flooding of the land by the Nile river lasted several months usually, during this time the Ferrel would send for workers for the great projects to be built.
Emergence During this time, the water would begin to recede, and the farmers will begin to plant their crops.
Harvest . When the farmers cared and harvested their crops after the cycle will begin again.
Weighing of the heart Time of judgment for the Egyptians heart was placed on a scale and weighed against a feather
Vizier The pharaoh, most trusted advisor he took down commands and help take care of the day-to-day, running of the government.
Howard Carter Discovered king tut tomb, in the valley of the kings in 1922.
Mastabas Mud bricked tombs that the earliest pharaohs were buried in.
Great. Pyramid of Giza. Largest pyramid in Egypt for the feral Khufu, and is the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world still standing.
Gift of the Nile Egypt is called the gift of the Nile because it provides life to a distribution .It gave them fertile land.
Why did the Egyptians take out their brain but leave in the heart? Because they believed all thoughts and actions came from the heart and not the brain so it was worthless
