The Progressive Era

| Pullman Strike | A railroad strike in 1894 that ended when President Grover Cleveland sent in federal troops. |
| Immigrant | A person who moves to another country after leaving his or her homeland. |
| Nativist | US citizens who opposed immigration because they were suspicious of immigrants and feared losing jobs to them. |
| Settlement Houses | Neighborhood centers staffed by professionals and volunteers for education, recreation, and social activities in poor areas. |
| Tenements | Poorly built, overcrowded housing where many immigrants lived. |
| Muckerakers | A term coined for journalists who “raked up” and exposed corruption and problems of society. |
| Sweatshops | Hot, stuffy workshops in which workers prepare materials for low wages. |
