Histology

TermDefinition
Simple Squamous Epithelium single layer of flat cells (nuclei centered), diffusion/filtration, lungs and blood vessels
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium single layer of cube cells (nuclei centered), absorption/secretion, kidney tubules
Simple Columnar Epithelium single layer of rectangular cells (nuclei not centered), absorption/secretion, stomach/digestive system
Pseudostratified (Ciliated) Columnar Epithelium single layer of columnar cells with different heights and nuclei levels, secretion, trachea (respiratory system)
Stratified Squamous Epithelium multi-layer of squamous cells, protection, skin
Transitional Epithelium several cell layers (multi-type), stretching, bladder
Areolar Connective Tissue 3 fibers are present: elastic/collagen/reticular(not visible), cushions organs and absorbs fluids, part of the skin
Adipose Connective Tissue similar to areolar but with large fat cells, insulation (warmth), under skin
Reticular Connective Tissue reticular fibers and cells (WBC), support, lymph nodes
Dense Regular Connective Tissue one-directional parallel collagen fibers with few elastin fibers (cell-fibroblast), attaches muscle to bone and bone to bone (SUPPORT), tendons and ligaments
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue irregular collagen fibers with few elastin fibers (cell-fibroblast), strong support, dermis of skin
Bone (Osseous) Connective Tissue hard calcified matrix with collagen fibers (cell-osteocytes), strong support and protection, bones
Blood Connective Tissue red blood cells (erythrocytes) and white blood cells (leukocytes) in plasma, transportation, blood vessels
Hyaline Cartilage Connective Tissue collagen fibers and chondrocytes in lacunae, strong support, nose
Fibrocartilage Connective Tissue thick collagen fibers, shock absorber, intervertebral discs
Elastic Cartilage Connective Tissue elastin fibers, strong and flexible support, external ear (ear and nose)
Nervous Tissue neurons and glial cells, communication, nervous system (brain)
Cardiac Muscle Tissue striations (single dark lines) and intercalated discs with one nucleus, movement, heart
Skeletal Muscle Tissue striations (many similar lines, long cells, multiple nuclei), movement, skeletal muscles
Smooth Muscle Tissue no striations (central nucleus), movement, blood vessels

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
