primary election an election in which members of a political party choose their party's candidates for the coming general election
recount an official second counting of election ballots, triggered by a legal challenge of the first count
registration process by which a citizen signs up to vote
residency living within the state for a period of time before being allowed to vote
secret ballot a system of voting that allows voters to keep their choices secret. The government provides uniform numbered ballots that list all candidates. A ballot is given to each voter at the polling place and is marked in private. First developed in Australia.
special election an election held between general elections for a specific purpose, such as a recall
split ticket when voters support some of their own party's candidates while also voting for candidates from other parties

write-in vote when a voter adds the name of a candidate not printed on the ballot originally
