These words will all be assessed on the unit test.
| Term | Definition |

| key/legend | an illustration that explains what the symbols or colors on a map represent |
| political map | a map that shows countries, cities, or states |
| physical map | a map that shows landforms |
| population map | a map that shows how many people live in an area |
| road map | a map that shows major and minor roads in a cities or towns |
| map | a flat representation of a location on Earth |
| Prime Meridian | the imaginary line that divides the Earth into the eastern and western hemispheres |
| hemispheres | any half of Earth |
| latitude | lines that run east to west and measure distance north or south of the equator. |
| longitude | lines that run north or south and measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian |
| parallel | another name for a line of latitude |
| compass rose | a set of pointers on a map or globe that show directions |
| cardinal directions | North, South, East, and West |
| intermediate directions | Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest |
| scale | the relationship between an actual distance on the Earth and the same distance shown on a map |
| globe | a 3-D representation of Earth |
