Abolition Movement/American System - Moises

TermDefinition
Abolition Movement A movement to end slavery varying from gradually ending, ending immediately, or stopping the spready of slavery. The movement gained momentum in the 1830s with published works and describing slavery influencing other to join. Gained significant traction.
A.B. Plot The AB plot refers to the political enmity in 1823-1824 between Senator Ninian Edwards of Illinois and William H. Crawford, Secretary of the Treasury.
Adams Cabinet Purge President Adams purged his cabinet of High Federalist Hamilton loyalists before the election of 1800. The secretary of war, secretary of state, and secretary of treasury were all dismissed or forced to resign.
Address of Southern Delegates to Constituents A document by john C. Calhoun in 1849 that was published in response to the Wilmot Proviso; it describes the North's actions that are in opposition to Southern desires. It was then signed by 48 different delegates to unite the South.
Age of Reason by Thomas Paine A book written in three parts by Thomas Paine, the first was published in 1794 which supported philosophical deism and challenged corruption in the Christian Church. It argues that reason and logic should guide morality.
Albany Regency A political group that was started in Albany, New York, by Martin Van Buren in 1821. It acted in opposition to the competing Republican factions and controlled nominating conventions, influence, and political platforms.
Alien and Sedition Acts 4 congressional acts that collectively are known as the Aliens and Sed. Acts passed during Adams's term. These laws increased citize. requirements, authorized deportation, arrests, or imprisonment of aliens and made it a crime to talk bad about the gov.
American Anti-Slavery Society An abolitionist org. founded by William Lloyd Garrison, Arthur Tappa, and Theodore Wright in 1833. It organized local groups to increase activism through publications, petitions, fundraising, and drafting resolutions. Used a focus on religious teachings.
American Colonization Society An org. founded in 1816 by Robert Finley to support purchasing and freeing enslaved ppl. then paying for their passage to Liberia, Africa. It had support from many influential ppl. including Henry Clay, but was declined due to loss of support and funding
American System A set of ideas, most famously led by Henry Clay, that became pop. in some sections of the U.S. after the War of 1812. It supported a national bank, tariff, and internal improvements to improve economic stability and self reliance. It was highly effective.
