Understanding Geography

| cardinal directions | the four main directions on a map or globe; north, south, east, and west |
| intermediate directions | the directions halfway between the cardinal directions; northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast |
| compass rose | a circle or decoration printed on a map showing the points of the compass |
| globe | a model or representation of Earth; a kind of sphere-shaped map |
| hemisphere | half of Earth or half a globe |
| equator | an imaginary line that divides the northern hemisphere from the southern hemisphere |
| parallels | horizontal lines on either side of the equator that describe latitude |
| meridians | lines on the globe that run north and south, connecting the poles over the surface of Earth |
| prime meridian | an imaginary line that runs from the North Pole, through England and Africa, to the South Pole |
| antimeridian | the 180th meridian; opposite of the prime meridian |
| border | a line that marks a boundary and helps define a place that covers an area of Earth and that separates one place from another |
| physical features | the landforms and water features of Earth's surface |
| continent | one of the seven largest bodies of land; Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America |
| ocean | a vast body of water that surrounds continents |
| elevation | the height of a place above sea level |
| relief | the difference between the highest and lowest points in an area |
| delta | the triangle-shaped area at the mouth of a river such as the Mississippi |
| estuary | the place where a river meets the sea and water changes from fresh to salt |
| climate | the average weather of an area over a long period of time |
| precipitation | any form of water, liquid or solid, that falls from the atmosphere and reaches the ground; rain, hail, sleet, and snow |
| cartographer | a person who draws and creates maps |
| atlas | a collection of maps |
| legend | the map key that explains the meaning of the symbols and sometimes the colors used on a map |
| scale | a set of lines, usually marked off in miles and kilometers, that indicates that a certain distance on the map equals a certain distance on Earth's surface |
