| Term | Definition |

| European Union | an association of European nations formed in 1993 for the purpose of achieving political and economic integration. |
| nationalism | A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one's country |
| militarism | A policy of glorifying military power and keeping a standing army always prepared for war |
| Great War | name originally given to the First World War (1914-1918). |
| Great Depression | the economic crisis beginning with the stock market crash in 1929 and continuing through the 1930s |
| Nazi Party | the political party founded in Germany in 1919 and brought to power by Hitler in 1933 |
| propoganda | Ideas spread to influence public opinion for or against a cause. |
| Holocaust | a large-scale destruction, especially by fire; a vast slaughter; a burnt offering |
| Cold War | A conflict that was between the US and the Soviet Union. The nations never directly confronted each other on the battlefield but deadly threats went on for years. |
| Iron Curtain | A political barrier that isolated the peoples of Eastern Europe after WWII, restricting their ability to travel outside the region |
| North Atlantic Trade Agreement | International Organization set up in 1949 to provide for the defense of western European countries and the United States from the perceived Soviet threat |
| euro | the basic monetary unit of most members of the European Union (introduced in 1999) |
| crusades | A series of holy wars from 1096-1270 AD undertaken by European Christians to free the Holy Land from Muslim rule. |
| empire | A group of states or territories controlled by one ruler |
| scramble for Africa | Term given for the rapid invasion of Africa by the various European powers. This began imperialism in Africa. |
