Reconstruction Vocab

TermDefinition
14th Amendment Gave citizenship rights to all men born in the U.S. regardless of skin color or previous conditions of servitude.
13th Amendment Abolished (ended) slavery in the U.S.
15th Amendment Gave voting rights to all male U.S. citizens.
Reconstruction The period of rebuilding the South after the Civil War.
scalawag Southerners who supported Northern policies; generally disliked by other Southerners.
carpetbagger Northerners who went South to profit off Reconstruction.
Jim Crow Laws laws passed by Southern states to enforce segregation and limit the rights of African Americans.
Ku Klux Klan (KKK) A violent hate group that formed after the Civil War with the goal of intimidating, terrorizing, and even killing Black Americans and White Radical Republicans.
10% Plan Introduced by Abraham Lincoln, this Reconstruction plan was lenient (soft) on the South and required that 10% of the population pledge an oath of loyalty.
Freedmen's Bureau An organization that provided food, clothing, medical treatment, and job training to newly-freed African Americans and poor Whites who had been displaced by the Civil War.
Compromise of 1877 A secret deal between Democrats and Republicans that resulted in Hayes winning the presidency and the removal of all federal troops from the South.
poll tax Voters had to pay a fee in order to vote.
literacy test Voters were required to pass a difficult test in reading, writing, or logic in order to vote.
Reconstruction Act of 1867 This act defined the conditions required for Southern states to rejoin the U.S. and allowed Northern troops to occupy the South.
