Describe how everyday people felt after the war. Equal
Identify a group that was left out of the cause of independence, especially in the south. African Americans
Why was it going to be a difficult time to set up a new government after the war had been fought? No unity. Also leaders were preaching for "natural rights," disruptive forces stalking the land, hard times, the bane of all regimes, British flooding market with cut rate goods. Political system inclined toward experimentation and innovation.
State the chief item of discord in the Articles of Confederation Western lands
What was needed for approval of the Articles of Confederation? Unanimous approval by all 13 states was required.
Identify how an amendment could be done. Any Amendment required unanimous ratification. This was almost impossible and meant that the amending process was unworkable.
Summarize the approach to business and taxes from Congress under the Articles of Confederation. Congress had no power to regulate commerce (states could establish different laws regarding navigation and tariffs). Congress couldn't enforce its tax collection program.
What was the money from land sales in the Old Northwest for? Paid off national debt.
Describe the sectioning of land in this territory (Old Northwest). It was to be divided into townships six miles square, each of which was to be split into 36 sections of one square mile each. (16th section set aside for benefit of public schools).
Population for new states? (Old Northwest) When a territory could boast sixty thousand inhabitants, it might be admitted by Congress as a state, with all the privileges of the thirteen charter members.
Explain why Congress could not enforce people’s desire to restrict British trade issues? Congress could not control commerce and the states refused to adopt a uniform tariff policy.

What were the issues that Daniel Shays was leading protests about? Farmers were losing their farms through mortgage foreclosures and tax delinquencies. The debtors demanded that the state issue paper money, lighten taxes, and suspend property takeovers.
Who were some of the “Demigods” present? George Washington, Ben Franklin, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton were the "Demigods" present.
Identify the "Demigods" not present. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Thomas Paine, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Patrick Henry were the "Demigods" not present.
The most important goal the convention had was to do what? (Patriots in Philadelphia) Above all they sought to curb the unrestrained democracy rampant in the various states. Strongly desired a firm, dignified, and respected government.
Summarize the differences between the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan. Virginia Plan would give larger states the advantage due to representation in both houses of Congress due to population. New Jersey Plan wanted equal representation, regardless of size and population.
How did the Great Compromise give New Jersey and Virginia both some of their goals? Larger states got representation by population in the House of Representatives while smaller states got equal representation in the Senate.
What power goes along with the role of Commander-in-Chief for the President? Granted power to wage war but Congress gets the right to declare war. President also has power to make appointments to domestic offices and veto power over legislation.
Contrast the feelings of the Federalists and the Anti-federalists toward the federal government. Anti-Federalists opposed the stronger federal government while the Federalists obviously favored it.
Identify the groups of people that would have supported both the Federalists and Anti-Federalists The middle class, (press/newspapers?)
What alarmed the Anti-Federalists? They believed it had been drawn up by the aristocratic elements and hence was antidemocratic. Also argued that sovereignty of states was submerged and that the freedom of people were in jeopardy due to absence of a bill or rights.
The nation’s population was settled pretty much where? East of the Appalachian Mountains.
What countries were still trying to interfere with the western settlement? Spain and Britain.
In what role was the Cabinet going to help President Washington? The Cabinet would give written opinions of the heads of the executive branch departments.
Identify the three Departments and the leaders under Washington. Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, and Secretary of War Henry Knox.
What role was Congress going to take on with the debt? Congress would fund the debt at par which meant paying off debts at face value plus accumulated interest.
How did Virginia come to accept the idea of state debt getting taken over by Congress? Virginia accepted the idea by getting the forthcoming federal district located on the Potomac River.
Identify the reason that “necessary and proper” was able to let Alexander Hamilton get the Bank of the United States. Hamilton argued that a national bank would not only be proper but necessary as the government was explicitly empowered to collect taxes and regulate trade.
Summarize what happened with aliens. Most immigrants were scorned by the Federalist party through laws.
Why would many disagree with the Sedition Act? It seemed to be in direct conflict with the Constitution.
State the beliefs of the Federalists. A strong central government, protect lives and estates of the wealthy, subordinate sovereignty-loving states, and promote foreign trade. Government should support private enterprise but not interfere with it.
Identify the beliefs of the Democratic-Republicans A weak central regime, best government is governed least, bulk of power retained by states, central authority kept at minimum, and national debt to be paid off.
1st Amendment * Protected the freedom of speech, religion, the press(media), assembly, and petition. Ex. You can pray in school before test.
2nd Amendment * Protected the ownership of firearms.
3rd Amendment No soldiers in your house without money for it.
4th Amendment * Search warrants are needed without probable cause.
5th Amendment * You have the right to remain silent when in trouble with the law/court. You also have the right to an attorney to assist you.
6th Amendment Your trial rights are protected/trial by jury of your peers.
7th Amendment If you are done wrong by someone from $20.00 or more you can sue in court.
8th Amendment * No cruel or unusual punishments allowed. (Death penalty has been ruled as constitutional)
9th Amendment Rights not yet written down yet can be added later. (Or you already have them) Ex. Marriage
10th Amendment If the national government does not want to "tackle an issue" then it is a state issue. Ex. Marijuana.
13th Amendment * Banned slavery. (Sometimes forms of slavery allowed as a punishment)
14th Amendment * Grants citizenship to former slaves as well as anyone who is born in the United States becomes a citizen.
15th Amendment * Free African American males and all men have the right to vote.
16th Amendment * Income tax. (Stacy's sarcastically favorite Amendment)
18th Amendment * Bans alcohol, liquor, importing or making it. (This Amendment goes with the 21st Amendment)
19th Amendment * Guaranteed women's voting rights
21st Amendment * Allows alcohol and liquor again. (This Amendment goes with the 18th Amendment)
26th Amendment * Everyone who is 18 has the right to vote.
