King Henry II 1154-1189; restored & extended royal authority; great legal reforms; fought with Thomas Becket
King John 1199-1216; raised taxes; angered his barons; forced to sign the Magna Carta
King Edward I 1272-1307; took a major step by allowing more people to be involved in Model Parliament.
Thomas Becket Archbishop of Canterbury; brutally murdered in Canterbury Cathedral
Constitutions of Clarendon Set of legislatures defining church-state relations in England; designed to restrict the Church’s privileges and limit the power of church courts
Barons A person of high rank by birth or by title; nobles
Magna Carta Legal document from 1215 that limited the king’s power. Means “Great Charter”
Habeas Corpus Legal concept that an accused person cannot be jailed without being charged with a crime
Model Parliament A governing body that included commoners, church officials, and nobles
Democratic Rule by the people and for the people
Legal Reforms The process of examining current laws, advocating for change, and implementing new laws
Black Death A deadly contagious disease caused by bacteria spread by fleas; The Bubonic Plague
Plague A widespread, infectious disease caused by bacteria
Famine Widespread condition when many people in an area do not have enough food or supplies
Hundred Years War A series of battles fought between France and England from 1337-1453
Longbow A hand-drawn wooden bow held vertically and used by medieval English archers
Crossbow A weapon that consists of a short bow mounted crosswise near the end of a stock
Heretic A person who holds beliefs that are contrary to religious teachings
Joan of Arc Led the French army to victory; burned at the stake for accusations of witchcraft
Nationalism Identification with and support for one’s own country
