Conservation To prevent the wasteful use of a resource.
Initiative Political procedure where voters can PROPOSE a law to be voted on during the next election
Referendum Political procedure in which voters vote directly on a law.
Suffrage The Right to Vote
Recall Political procedure that removes elected officials before the end of the official's term.
Progressives People who fought for reforms to make people's lives better.
Reform Making changes to correct abuses and/or injustices.
National Parks System An agency in the U.S. government that manages National Parks.
Muckrakers Journalists who exposed social problems
Organic Act of 1916 A law that conserved plants and animals in National Parks. This law established the National Park Service
Susan B. Anthony Progressive reformer that fought for Women's suffrage
Upton Sinclair Muckraker who wrote The Jungle. He exposed the disgusting practices of the meat packing industry. The Jungle led to the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.
16th Amendment This change to the Constitution allowed the U.S. government to charge and Income Tax
17th Amendment This change to the Constitution allowed citizens to directly vote for U.S. Senators.
18th Amendment This change to the Constitution prohibited the sale, transport, or manufacturing (making) of alcohol.
19th Amendment This change to the Constitution states that the right to vote cannot be denied based on gender (allowed women to vote).
