| nomad(ic) | constantly moving from place to place to provide for your basic needs |
| archaeologists | a person who studies human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains |
| domesticate | ways to control different plants and animals to better suit human needs |
| innovation | a new idea or method; the introduction of something new |
| migrate | to move from one region to another to settle there |
| levee | an embankment built to keep river water from flooding the land |
| irrigation | the act of supplying water to land or crops |
| silt | fine particles of earth, clay, or sand that eventually settle out of water |
| artisan | a person skilled in making things, especially by using the hands. People such as those who make furniture, quilts, or other crafts are artisans. |
| polytheism | the belief in more than one god |
| ziggurat | a terraced, pyramidal tower of the ancient Sumerians, Assyrians, and Babylonians |
| deity | a god or goddess |
| lasting contributions | something that you contribute or do to help produce or achieve something together with other people, or to help make something successful |
| city-state | each city and the surrounding land it controlled; functioned like an independent country today |
| economy | the wealth and resources of a country or region; especially in terms of the production and consumption of goods and services |
| goods and services | goods are things people buy and sell; services are tasks performed for the benefit of the recipient |
| scarce resources | the demand for a good or services is greater than the availabilityy of the good or service |
