| Ranchos | Huge farms/ ranches created to raise livestock, which helped the Spanish to establish settlements. |
| Exploration | Travel that is undertaken to discover new resources or establish a claim in a new area. |
| Established | having been settled securely for a long time and therefore recognized. |
| Settlement | The act of going to live in a new place where few people have lived before. |
| Decimated | To destroy or kill a large part of. |
