Term Definition
Mission A settlement that was founded by Spanish missionaries to spread Christianity to the natives in the area.
Presidio A military fort under Spanish control that was created to protect the mission.
Colonization When a country sponsors and establishes a settlement in a new area and controls the people.
Ranchos Huge farms/ ranches created to raise livestock, which helped the Spanish to establish settlements.
Exploration Travel that is undertaken to discover new resources or establish a claim in a new area.
Established having been settled securely for a long time and therefore recognized.
Settlement The act of going to live in a new place where few people have lived before.
Decimated To destroy or kill a large part of.
irrigation The process of supplying water to areas of land to make the ground useable for growing crops.
Influence Having an effect or impact on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others.
Clergy A group of officials who perform religious services, such as priests, ministers, and Franciscans.
Minerals Nutrients that occur naturally in rocks and soil.
