Seneca Falls Declaration of 1848 declaration that proposed equal rights for women
Monroe Doctrine warns European nations to stay out of the Western Hemisphere; US would not get involved
Treason attempting or taking action to assist in bringing down the government
Cotton Gin machine used to process raw cotton
Mechanical Reaper machine used to harvest wheat
Abolitionist person who actively works to get rid of slavery
Suffrage the right to vote
Spoils System practice of giving government jobs as repayment for support
Second Great Awakening Protestant religious revival during the early 19th century in the United States; helped influence the need for abolition
Temperance being absent of alcohol; movement making the sale and consumption of alcohol illegal
Missouri Compromise (1820) a law that tried to address growing sectional tensions over the issue of slavery; every state below the 48th parallel would be a slave state with everything above a free state; with Missouri as the exception
Compromise of 1850 It admitted California to the U.S. as a free state, but they allowed some territories decided on slavery.
Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854) It create 2 new territories and allowed for popular sovereignty
Popular Sovereignty The laws or customs of a state are decided by the majority of the wants population
