Need for Law and Order Colonists were miles from courts and law, they needed something
English Bill of Rights Created in England, gave all English citizens (including colonists) rights such as freedom of speech.
Magna Carta Written in England in 1215, established trial by jury and that no one was above the law
Virginia House of Burgesses The first elected representative assembly in the US. An early self government.
John Locke Life, liberty, and property. Championed individual rights. Enlightenment thinker.
William Penn Founded Pennsylvania, home of Quakers, friendly and tolerant
Roger Williams Kicked out of Massachusetts, founded Connecticut on religious freedom
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut First written constitution in the US, started freedom of religion
Charles de Montesquieu Enlightenment thinker, championed three branches of government.
Mayflower Compact First self-government in the US. Written social contract by the Pilgrims.
