| Term | Definition |

| Latitude | Imaginary horizontal lines running across the earth to measure distance from the equator |
| Longitude | Imaginary vertical lines running across the earth to measure the distance from the Prime Meridian |
| Prime Meridian | Imaginary line that runs up and down the middle of the Earth and divides its east and west |
| Equator | Imaginary line that runs along the middle of the earth and divides it into north and south |
| Parallel | Latitude |
| Meridians | longitude |
| Compass Rose | Shows the direction, from any given point on the map, of north, south, east, and west |
| Map key | A table or map segment of a map that contains a list of the symbols, icons, and colors used on the map and their meanings |
| Map scale | Tells you how big or small the map is compared with the actual area it represents |
| Cardinal Directions | North, South, East, West |
| Intermediate Directions | Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest |
| Inset Map | Smaller map featured on the same page as the main map |
| Map Title | Tells what the map is about, revealing the purpose and content |
| Grid | North-South and East-West lines on a map that intersect to form a pattern of squares |
| Symbols | What maps use to represent different features on the map |
