Definition

| Latitude | imaginary horizontal lines running across the earth to measure distance from the equator |
| Longitude | imaginary vertical lines running across the earth to measure distance from the prime meridian |
| Prime Meridian | imaginary line that runs up and down the middle of the earth and divides it east and west |
| Equator | imaginary line that runs along the middle of the earth and divides it north and south |
| Parallels | LATITUDE |
| Meridians | LONGITUDE |
| Compass Rose | shows the direction, from any given point on the map or north, south, east, west |
| Map Key | a table or segment of the map that contains a list of symbols, icons, and colors used on the map and there meanings |
| map scale | tells you how big or small the map is compared with the actual area it represents |
| cardinal directions | north (N) south (S) east (E) and west (W) |
| intermediate directions | northeast(NE) southeast(SE) southeast(SE) southwest(SW) |
| inset map | smaller map featured on the same page as the main map |
| map title | tell what the map s about, revealing the maps purpose and content |
| grid | north-south east-west lines on a map that intersect to form a pattern of squares |
