Map Skills and 5 Themes of Geography

| Map | A visual representation of a specific area or place. |
| Compass Rose | A symbol on a map that shows the cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west. |
| Scale | Shows the relationship between the distances on the map and the actual distances on the Earth's surface. |
| Legend or Key | Explains the symbols and colors used to represent different features on a map. |
| Latitude | Imaginary lines that run parallel to the equator and measure the distance north or south of the equator. |
| Longitutde | Imaginary lines that run from the North Pole to the South Pole and measure the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian. |
| Equator | An imaginary line that divides the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. |
| Prime Meridian | An imaginary line that divides the Earth into the Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere, passing through Greenwich, England. |
| Physical Map | Shows the natural features of an area, such as mountains, rivers, deserts, and forests |
| Political Map | Shows the boundaries and divisions of countries, states, and cities. |
| Location | Refers to where a place is located on the Earth's surface. |
| Relative Location | Relative location describes the position of a place in relation to other landmarks, regions, or features. |
| Absolute Location | Absolute location refers to the exact position of a place on the Earth's surface. It is determined using latitude and longitude coordinates. These coordinates provide a precise location for any place on Earth. An address can be an absolute location. |
| Place | Refers to the physical and human characteristics of a location. |
| Human-Environment Interaction | Refers to how people interact with and modify their environment. |
| Movement | Refers to the transportation of people, goods, and ideas from one place to another. |
| Region | Refers to an area that shares common characteristics. |
