Vocabulary - The Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution

colony an area, region, or country that is controlled by people from another country
immigrant a person from one country who moves to another country
monarchy a government led by a king or queen
Parliment in Great Britain, a lawmaking group made up of elected and non elected representatives who govern WITH the king or queen
self-government the ability of people to rule themselves and make their own laws
tax money that people pay to the government
delegate a representative
declaration a formal statement
militia a group of armed citizens prepared for military service at any time
petition a formal written request for change, signed by many people
policy an official course of action
pamphlet a small booklet that includes information or ideas about a single topic
revolution the act of overthrowing the government with the hopes of starting a new or different one
republic a government in which people elect representative to rule for them
