The Early Americas

TermDefinition
civilizations A society in an advanced state of social development (e.g., with complex legal, political, and religious organizations).
terraces A flat area on a hillside where people farm or have built houses.
causeways A raised roadway that is made of dirt.
quipus A cord or string of knots with numbers used as a communication device.
city-state An independent city — and sometimes its surrounding land — which has its own government.
glaciers A large mass of ice.
settlement A colony or any small community of people.
surplus More than is needed, desired, or required.
