| chronological | events placed in order of when they took place |
| era | a period of time that associated with a particular person, event, or quality |
| landform | shapes and types of land |
| plate tectonics | the theory that the Earth's surface is divided into a number of plates which float independently over hot liquid rock |
| climate | the average weather of a place over a period of 20-30 years. |
| vegitation | plant life that grows in an area |
| culture | the customs, ideas, beliefs, and skills of a people |
| physical geography | the study of a land and its features |
| human geography | learning about people and their ways |
| globe | the most accurate picture of the Earth, it is a sphere with map of Earth printed on it |
| relief | a change in elevation |
| physical map | a map that highlights many of the natural features of a place, such as a mountains, plains, rivers, and lakes by using color and shading |
| political map | a map that shows features of place such as state, countrys, and cities |
| drought | long periods in wich rainfall at a much lower rate rather than usual and may cause svere damage tp crops |
| irrigation | an artificial way to supply water to crops |
| matrilineal | descent is traced primarily through the mother. |
| adobe | a building material of mud, rocks, clay, and dry grass shaped into bricks and used to construct pueblo dwellings. |
| reservations | land set aside by the government for use by indian peoples. |
| migrate | the ability of a people group to move into and inhabit a new region. |
| tipi | cone shaped tents made of poles covered in animal skins used as a dwelling by some Native American groups. |
| tribe | a number of family groups that follow the same leader and share the same territory and culture. |

| artifacts | objects made by humans and used by archeologist to learn about the past human |
| Beringia | during the Ice Age, Russia was connected to Alaska by a bridge of ice |
| indigenous people | Native people to an area |
| hunter gatherers | people who survive by searching for wild plants and animals to eat |
