French & Indian War War between North American colonies of the British Empire and the French
Proclamation of 1763 Prohibited any English settlement west of the Appalachian mountains
Parliament Governing body in England, consisting of House of Lords and House of Commons
The Enlightenment Cultural movement based on reason, and logic, influenced the American Revolution
Townsend Acts A series of measures passed by British Parliament in 1767, taxes goods and imports to the American colonies
Quartering Act Required colonists to provide food, water, and housing for British military forces.
Continental Congress A series of governing bodies where colonial representatives convene to discuss actions against British rule.
Tories American colonists who supported the British during the American Revolution
Battle of Saratoga Turning point of the American Revolution
Battle of Yorktown Final battle of the Revolutionary War where the British surrendered
Natural Rights Rights that are granted at birth and cannot be taken away; life, liberty, property
Unalienable Cannot be taken away or given up
Republic Form of representative democracy
Articles of Confederation First U.S. government, which did not give states the power to collect tax and had no executive branch
Commerce Activity of buying and selling, especially on a large scale
Bill of Rights First ten amendments to the Constitution with focus on protecting
Appease To give in to; when someone allows one action to occur in hopes that it will prevent further altercations.
Checks and Balances Organization of system that ensures that political power is not concentrated in the hands of a single person or group
The Virginia Plan Plan when establishing our government which split legislatures into two houses, legislatures would be held to specific limits
Federalists A person who supports a government where several state governments come together under a federal government
Anti-Federalists Someone who was against the adoption of the Constitution
Ratify To approve or agree to
Democratic-Republicans First opposition political party in the U.S. that focused on restricting the powers of the federal government with an emphasis on states' rights
Marbury v. Madison Landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that established the principle of judicial review in the United States.
