credibility how truthful the information is
bias unreasoned, emotional judgement about people and/or events
empire a large territory in which several groups of people are ruled by a single leader or government
Caesar Augustus previously named Octavian; first emperor of Rome; reigned from 44 B.C.E to 14 C.E.
Praetorian Guard the army of the Roman Emperor
corruption a pattern of illegal or immoral activities by government officials
decline a slow breakdown or failure
frontier a border between two countries
Germanic Tribes a group of people living in central Europe and Scandinavia who managed to take over Rome with their strong military
Byzantine Empire the eastern part of the Roman Empire that ruled from the 4th century C.E. to the 15th century C.E. The capital was originally named Byzantium
Constantine the first Christian Roman Emperor; briefly reunited the two halves of the empire; moved the capital to Constantinople
Constantinople the capital city for the eastern Roman Empire; originally named Byzantium; today it is Istanbul, Turkey
Roman Empire post-republican period of ancient Rome; included large land territories around the Mediterranean sea in Europe, Africa, and Asia; lasted from 27 B.C.E. from 476 C.E.
