Early America: Settlement & Colonization

TermDefinition
Puritans a group of English protestants in the late 16th & 17th centuries who sought religious freedom. Settled in the New England region of the colonies.
Covenant a promise to engage in an action, or to simply have an aggreement.
Direct Democracy a form of government in which the people have a direct influence on how laws and policies are decided
Indentured Servants a person who signs and is bound to work for another person for a specified time especially if they owe that person payment
Mercantile an economic system in which the government encouraged trade as a means to generate wealth for the country
Lumbering cutting down trees and preparing wood to be traded
Subsistence Farming growing crops and raising livestock, but only for that person/family to use and not for trade
Prosper to be successful in terms of finances
Chattel an English law for any property that can be movable, such as leases, animals, or in historical terms, slavery
Institutions a society or organization for a religious, educational, and social group
Dissenters People who go against something, such as Puritan actions towards the Church of England
Artisans a worker that manufactures with the intent of trade
Denominations different branches of an institution that unite under a single, larger concept, such as Christianity
Evangelical a person or institution that has the intent of spreading ideas to gain followers, such as Christianity
Plantation a large farm with the intent to produce cash crops
