Vocabulary terms for Unit 2

TermDefinition
Bessemer Process (proceso de Bessemer) Using this method, steel could be produced far more cheaply and quickly than in the past.
Horizontal Integration (integración horizontal) Process in which industries (businesses) would buy other firms (businesses) from the same industry. Ex. Standard Oil buying all the oil refineries, so they owned all the oil production.
Vertical Integration (integración vertical) Process in which a business would own all steps in producing a good. Ex. Carnegie owned the mines that produced ore, the factories that produced steel, and railroads that would distribute the steel.
Laissez-Faire "Hands-off" This term means government should not have any interference in private business.
Sherman Antitrust Act (Ley Antimonopolios Sherman) Outlawed trusts, monopolies, and other businesses that restricted trade or controlled all parts of an industry. Ex. outlawed horizontal and vertical integration
Social Darwinism (Darwinismo Social) Belief that businesses would succeed if they were run by most capable person. Survival of the fittest
Chisholm Trail (Camino de Chisholm) Trail in which cowboys (cattle drivers) would drive cattle from San Antonio, Texas to Abilene, Kansas.
Dawes Act (Ley Dawes) 1887 Federal Law that gave land to individual Native Americans rather than to tribes, encouraging them to assimilate (become American)
Exoduster African Americans who migrated from the South to the Great Plains after the Civil War
Homestead Act (Ley Asentamientos Rurales) 1862 Federal Law that granted 160 Acres to settlers who agreed to move west, farm, and live on the land for five years.
Populist Party (Partido Populista) Political party founded in 1892 calling for policies to help working people, such as government ownership of railroads and coinage of silver
Transcontinental Railroad (Ferrocarril Transcontinental) A railroad that goes across the continent
