Different Types of Maps - Grade 5
| Term | Definition |

| globe | a 3-D sphere of the entire planet |
| map | a drawing of the earth, or a part of the earth, on a flat surface |
| map title | an element that describes the specific purpose, theme, or subject of a map |
| map key | a box that explains what the symbols, colors, or labels on a map mean |
| compass rose | a symbol that shows directions on a map or globe |
| scale | a symbol that shows what the distance on a map would convert to in real terms |
| political map | a map that shows borders of countries and states and may also include the names of cities and capitals |
| physical maps | a map that shows the earth's natural landscape through land elevation and water depths |
| topography | the term used to describe the different landforms and natural features that can be seen on a physical map |
| road map | a map that shows roadways for transportation in a specific area |
| climate map | a map that shows weather patterns, like temperature, precipitation, and humidity, in an area |
| resource map | a map that shows where certain natural resources exist in specific areas |
| thematic map | maps that show features or data related to a specific theme or topic |
