Dred Scott v Sandford Supreme Court Case that ruled enslaved people are ‘property’ and do not have rights
Election of 1860 Lincoln was elected as president This lead to the succession (leaving) of South states, creating the Confederacy
Emancipation Proclamation Lincoln stated that any South states that refused to return to the Union (still in rebellion), their enslaved people will be freed This changed the focus of the war from keeping the Union together to be about ending enslavement
