| Portolan Charts | Developed by the Portuguese, which mapped harbours & coastlines more precisely, recording info. like currents, tides & depths |
| Caravel | Ship that is large & sturdy enough to make long voyages and able to sail in all winds. |
| Lateen Sails | Triangular sails allowed ships to sail into wind, and made them easier to manoeuvre in bays & along coasts. |
| Caravel Built Hulls | Had planks fitted edge to edge. |
| Rudders | Made caravel easier to steer. |
| Castle | At the back of the deck, improved the crew's quarters & served as defensible area in case of attack. |
